Sharine, aka the "Hummingbird" is Illium's mother. She is a a brilliant artist who taught Aodhan to draw and sculpt.
She is one of the angels of old and knew Caliane before her Sleep. Sharine rescued a gravely injured young Raphael and treated him like a second son.
Events Before the Series[]
Sharine had been 85 years old when her parents chose to go into Sleep. When she was 160 years old her lover Raan died in his sleep next to her. 40 years later when she was 200 years old she went to check on her parents to ensure no one had disturbed them she discovered that they had died in their Sleep.

Story takes place 400 years prior to the series. — Illium delivered a letter to Jessamy on his return from the Tower to the Refuge before she went to see his mother because Galen threatened to "pull off my feathers one at a time" if he didn't. Jess tells him to go to her—she's been watching the skies for her son. [1]

The Hummingbird accepted an invitation to New York to celebrate some anniversary. Illium is utterly thrilled and happy. He suddenly felt as if his heart exploded and he plummeted from the sky. Sharine appears to have improved, being more grounded in the present, and tells Elena that she wants to learn how to use knives so she can stab Aegaeon, her former lover. This shocks Aodhan and Illium.
